Mission Statement
The Social Studies Department at Harrison HS is dedicated to using best practices to provide our students with exemplary social science education. We will assist our students in becoming responsible citizens by focusing on the geographic, social, political and economic forces that have shaped the world we live in today. We will use available technology and data-driven instruction to provide equity and excellence for every student.
Course Description
In this course, students will have the opportunity to explore human behavior and mental processes on a scientific basis. Students will be expected to use scientific research methods to explore topics such as human development, personality, mental health, and social and biological explanations of behavior.
Required Textbook and Other Materials:
Psychology: Principles in Practice. 2010. Spencer A. Rathus. Holt McDougal.
Other required materials include:
- Netbook
- Flash Drive
- Notebook or Loose-leaf Paper
- Folder or Binder
- Pencil/Pen
Policies and Expectations
- Please bring all materials to every class, including your textbook and netbook. Passes will not be written to go to your locker to retrieve materials that you were supposed to bring with you!
- Tardies: If you come to my room with a pass, please bring the pass to me without interrupting class. If you do not have a pass, please come into class quietly and sign the tardy log on the table.
- Absences: If you are absent, you will be required to check the calendar feature on the weebly site for assignments. If your absence is excused, you will be given the same amount of time that you were absent to turn in your work. Any work not turned in at that time will be referred to as LATE.
- Late work will be accepted for one week after the due date. 50% will be taken off if the work is late. Please make sure to put your name, the assignment title, the date it was due, and the date you turned the paper in at the top of the paper.
- All work that is turned in on paper will need to have your name, the date the assignment was due, and the date that you turned it in on the top. Please also include the class name and period as it is easier for me to keep track of.
Attendance Policy
Students will be expected to maintain good attendance to receive a credit for the course. Students who have ten unexcused absences will meet with an administrator and be placed on probation. A loss of credit will occur if the student fails to meet the administrator’s requirements.
Grading Policy
Grades in this course will be based on a point system. To figure your grade, you will take your total points and divide by the total number of points available.
The following scale will be used for this course.
100%-85%- A
84%- 75%- B
74%-65%- C
64%-55%- D
54% or below: F
Required Activities and Assignments
Bell Ringer/Discussion Question
All students will be expected to complete an daily IDEA on paper and turn the paper in every Friday. These IDEA will be used as vocabulary exercises and will need to be kept through the entire course in your psychology binder.
Class Discussions
This class is a discussion and project based classroom. In order to get the full experience in the classroom and to understand the material, it is incredibly important for you to participate in the class discussion. You will be graded on your participation at the end of each grading period. This can make or break your grade, so please participate accordingly.
Assessments
Assessments will consist of a combination of the following:
- Bellringers/Discussion Boards
- Class Participation
- Homework
- In class assignments
- Article Analysis
- Quizzes/ Tests
- Projects
Cell Phones , Headphones, and MP3 Players
Cell phones, headphones, and MP3 players are only allowed in the classroom when given permission by the teacher. Texting, tweeting, and other forms of communication on your cell phone will not be tolerated. Please do your best to keep them in your pockets or lockers. The device will be taken to the office if it becomes a distraction in the classroom.
Final Exam Policy
Each grading period will be worth 40% of your grade with the final consisting of the final 20%. Exams will be cumulative (covering an entire semester’s course material).
Exemption Policy- Students may exempt two final exams if the following requirements are fulfilled:
1. A or B in the course
2. No more than two tardies in the course
3. No more than five excused absences
4. Maintain citizenship
5. No missing assignments
Class Fees
You will be assessed a $5 fee for this course and this will be billed home with your school dues.
